KLM is beginning a new campaign to support local communities and their distinctive dialects around the UK. Three candidates for the prize must have real Welsh, Scottish, or North East accents. The prize is a free roundtrip ticket to any KLM location worldwide.
Anyone with one of the three dialects is eligible to apply to voice the latest SkyTeam carrier advertising campaign, “Fly It Home,” and have their accent broadcast throughout regional airwaves for everyone to enjoy.
What is need to succeed?
By seeking for the dialects that actually distinguish local towns in the UK, the airline is honouring its long-standing relationships to those communities. KLM declared that it is looking for the top regional intonations, lilts, and tones in Scotland, Wales, and the North East of England to narrate their most recent radio ad campaign. The three grand prize winners will each receive two round-trip tickets from the UK to a KLM location of their choice from one of the 17 UK airports it serves.
There will also be awards given out to six runners-up who will be chosen at random. Tickets for two people to any KLM European location of their choice will be awarded to three winners. Three more contestants will each receive round-trip airfare to Amsterdam. Entering is as simple as recording the script below and “letting your true local voice shine”
“Flying KLM Royal Dutch Airlines right from your local airport makes it easier to find joy. Live new experiences and reconnect with loved ones in over 160 destinations with quick transfers via Amsterdam, flying KLM.
“Take off from your local airport, find that feeling, fly it home. Fly home with so much more than you departed with… Book at KLM.co.uk”
The length of each entry must not exceed 30 seconds, and participants may upload their voice or video message to the contest website. The contest is open until midnight on 13th July.
Over a quarter of Brits countrywide claim to have changed their accent at some point, according to study done for the airline. People from Essex are most likely to tone down their accents to avoid humiliation, according to a study on perceptions and attitudes surrounding regional accents, which revealed that a variety of reasons contributed to this adjustment.
The study also revealed that if accents aren’t represented in the media and popular culture, individuals don’t feel proud of them. One in five residents of the West Country or Birmingham could not name a famous person who has a voice similar to theirs, supporting the notion that there is something wrong with the way they talk.
Those from Liverpool and Scotland were by far the most likely to keep their accents in tact given their propensity to do so in any situation. While 74% of those polled who were Welsh said they would not change their accent for anyone since it is an essential component of who they are. KLM’s general manager for the UK and Ireland, Fahmi Mahjoub, stated their joy at being a part of this project: “KLM is proud to be championing local communities across the UK and celebrating their different accents, phrases and what makes them unique. We understand the importance of heritage, local communities, and feeling connected to form and shape identity.
“We’re proud to make it easier than ever for Brits to travel from their regional communities to places all over the world via Amsterdam, so they can stay local and save time, money, and effort when planning their next trip.”
The Amsterdam hub has long provided travellers from regional UK locations with a simple connection to long-distance locations. Because of the simplicity of checking in at nearby airports, certain parts of the country find that flying to Amsterdam is faster than connecting through London.
