Venice to Implement Admission Fee Due to Overtourism

In an effort to combat overtourism, Venice is scheduled to implement a daily admission fee of up to €10 beginning in June.

Following a busy Easter weekend with an expected 125,000 visitors, the Italian city has announced that an entry fee pilot plan will be implemented, requiring visitors to book and pay.

Tourists will enter through an electronic turnstile and pay a fee ranging from €3 to €10, depending on how crowded the city is on that particular day.

If the plan works out, it will be made permanent in 2023.

Luigi Brugnaro, the Mayor of Venice, remarked on Twitter: “Today many have understood that making the booking system is the right path to take for a more balanced management of tourism.

“We will be the first in the world to carry out this difficult experimentation.”

For many years, the Italian city has struggled to deal with the increasing number of guests, and last summer it prohibited huge cruise ships.
