United Airlines made a new rollout announcement for its mobile app this morning, including Live Activities for iPhones with Dynamic Island. The iPhone 14 Pro and/or iPhone 14 Pro Max now allow users to view real-time flight information on their lock screen.
United is the first airline to upgrade its mobile app to include Apple’s new Live Activities feature, which is available on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, as it pursues its goal of being the finest airline in the United States. Customers may now access real-time information on their lock screen and, if their phone is unlocked, the Dynamic Island, thanks to the upgrade.
According to United, its customers check the status of their flights and mobile boarding passes more than 800,000 times every day. United has now made boarding cards, gate, and seat numbers, and a countdown clock to departure time available without having to unlock a phone, taking advantage of the additional features introduced in September with the iPhone 14 Pro series.
The following information is available with just a quick glance at a screen:
Lock screen or dynamic island (when unlocked and expanded) – Flight number, on-time status, inbound aircraft status, estimated departure and arrival times, and more.
Lock screen – open boarding pass directly from Live Activity
Dynamic Island – departure and arrival gates, pre and in-flight countdowns, baggage carousel information
According to Linda Jojo, Chief Customer Officer, United Airlines, “We’re seeing soaring demand for travel this summer, and Live Activities puts all the flight information you need right at your fingertips, whether your iPhone is locked or you’re doing something else like checking email, listening to music or texting friends. This new feature is another way United is leveraging technology to improve our customers’ travel journey. It’s going to save passengers a lot of time, and we think they’re going to love it, especially during a busy travel season.”
By the end of the month, the update will be broadly accessible after it has begun to roll out. Passengers must have smartphones running iOS 16.1 or later and the most recent version of the United App in order to utilise the airline’s new capabilities.
Prior to a few years ago, United launched the United Next programme, which comprised significant purchases for new aircraft as well as interior modifications for both new and retrofitted older aircraft. The carrier showcased a 25-year-old Airbus A319 last week as its first modified aircraft.
The updated A319 has new United First seats, larger overhead bins with space for one carry-on bag per passenger, power at each seat, IFE screens, and Bluetooth connectivity. Although many of the carrier’s Boeing 737 MAXs that have been delivered so far feature the new interiors, the A319 was the first of roughly 100 aircraft to receive the upgrade.
