The Hoxton has officially opened its doors in the effortlessly stylish Charlottenburg neighborhood of West Berlin, launching the brand in Germany with unmistakable style. The Hoxton, Charlottenburg offers 234 rooms, The Teahouse, a charming corner café that turns into a cozy cocktail bar as the sun sets, House of Tandoor, an Indian restaurant serving up family-style, spice-filled dishes and natural wines, and a cozy fireside Winter Garden located in the hotel’s spacious, open-house lobby. The Apartment, which will soon house West Berlin’s biggest parties, is made up of three meeting and event areas arranged around a central Pantry Kitchen and hidden beneath the hotel’s eaves.
The interiors were created by Ennismore’s in-house design firm, AIME Studios, and are linked by a meticulously crafted story centered on rough nouveau, a concept that is inspired by both the theatricality of Charlottenburg’s golden age and the raw materiality of Brutalism. Layered and textured design elements are used; rough plaster walls serve as a backdrop for elaborate Art Deco light fixtures and vintage furniture, and startling industrial materials are used in contrast to opulent cornicing and emerald-green tiles. A custom abstract mural by Berlin-based artist Stefanie Kägi, which dominates one wall of the foyer and alludes to the jerky, dance-like figuration of German Expressionism, is part of a carefully curated collection of locally sourced and commissioned artwork.
The bright and airy lobby’s color scheme is dominated by blue and green tones and is filled with mid-century furniture from Northern Europe, custom rugs, and Bauhaus-inspired artwork. The lobby’s clusters of Art Nouveau-inspired sofas, armchairs, and tables welcome visitors and offer quaint places to work, meet, or grab a nibble from the lobby menu of Hox favorites. These furnishings are arranged under beautiful Murano glass chandeliers. A central wraparound bar leads to a cozy Winter Garden, which is the ideal place to pull up a bar stool for post-work cocktails or curl up close to the tile fireplace in the Delft style for a quick snifter as the evenings become cooler.
The 234 bedrooms are each distinguished by Art Nouveau forms and expressive design elements that draw inspiration from the historical buildings that make up the neighborhood’s architectural landscape. Desaturated pinks and greens form a stylish backdrop for scalloped headboards and vintage-inspired furnishings, and the shell theme is repeated in eye-catching rug patterns and beautiful glass wall lamps. The contrast of exposed metal shelves and graduated mauve tile in the bathroom’s design provides a solid counterpoint to the smooth fluidity of the rooms’ wall paneling and wooden herringbone flooring.
There are seven different room types: Shoebox, Cosy, Cosy Neighbourhood, Roomy, Roomy Twin, Biggy, and Biggy Up. All of these types of rooms have the trademark Hox amenities, such as Roberts radios, Naturalmat mattresses, and the renowned neighborhood survival guides with tried-and-true local recommendations from those in the know. Coffee and tea are provided as normal, and refrigerators are filled with water and fresh milk. The Hox is known for its front desk food and beverage selection, which includes some local specialties and is offered at Späti pricing.
The Teahouse, which is open day and night and is situated just in front of the main restaurant, is a great place for visitors to start the day with breakfast. You may anticipate a breakfast bar piled high with naan sandwiches, delectable pastries with an Indian flair, fragrant loose-leaf tea, masala chai, and Bonanza filter coffee. Visitors will enter through The Teahouse to the restaurant, where House of Tandoor will serve breakfast dishes such as Vada Pav, coconut and garlic chutney, and fried egg, as well as Bombay potato hash with fried egg, raita, and pomegranate.
Starting at noon, lighter lunch options will be available alongside hearty curries served with fluffy flame-fired naans and rotis. These lighter alternatives include fresh punchy salads, colorful vegetable plates, and meat and fish expertly cooked in the three big tandoor ovens at the front of the restaurant.
As the evening draws in, House of Tandoor will up the drama with dishes including Amritsari crispy Lamb Chops, Black Pepper Chicken Tikka, and Bhaji onion rings with smoked aubergine raita, before rolling into late-night tea-infused cocktails including Clementine Bellini with turmeric and ginger tea, clementine, sherbert, fino, Aperol and sparkling wine and Tri Colour Margarita with Sri Lankan black tea, blanco tequila Ancho Reyes, agave and citrus. Additionally, a carefully curated wine list will be available, with wines from small German and Austrian producers with an emphasis on the Gewurztraminer and Riesling varietals as well as light pours like Beaujolais and Pinot Noir to compliment the robust flavors of the cuisine House of Tandoor has to offer.
The Teahouse and House of Tandoor’s interiors imitate the splendor of the big palaces and hotels in Kolkata and Bombay in the 1920s as well as the classical elegance of Charlottenburg. At The Teahouse, the curved bar with the green marble countertop and shell-patterned mosaic tiles highlight the elegance of the area, which is illuminated by the large windows. Comfortable bench seating, Indian food, and an open-plan copper and wood kitchen are all included at House of Tandoor.
Warm accents made of wood and inventive artwork provide a nice contrast to the rough walls made of lime-wash plaster. A central sculpture of retro-style gramophones alludes to the Indian jazz era and epitomizes the subcontinent’s final marriage of West and East cultures.
Three adaptable private rooms, the Study, Dining Room, and Living Room, are located in The Apartment, a hybrid meeting and events space that is a component of every Hoxton hotel. The Apartment is organized around a shared Pantry Kitchen. The Apartment’s seventh-floor location is reminiscent of a 1920s parlor, and its interiors, which were influenced by Mary Wigman, feature fluid lines, gentle, subdued tones, vintage lighting, and a hint of chintz. Individual rooms work well for private eating, team outings, and meetings, while the entire facility may be rented exclusively and used as a chic location for events like parties, launches, films, and receptions.
In each of its neighborhoods, The Hoxton strives to be a Good Neighbour, in part by extending long-term, meaningful support to community charities and shelters. The hotel in Berlin has teamed up with Refugio, a group that offers shelter, guidance, and support to refugees. The hotel will make financial contributions, as well as provide necessary linen, towels, and beds, as well as schedule regular employee volunteer hours. Additionally, customers at The House of Tandoor will have the option to make a voluntary $1 gift to their tab to support Refugio’s city projects.
The Hoxton, Charlottenburg is partnering with Record Magazine, an NYC-born independent magazine with origins in Berlin, to highlight the individuals integral to the city’s specialized music scene in terms of support for the creative community. The Hox Shop and lobby turntable listening hub will receive vinyl from the Record Magazine team, and The Apartment will host live music performances.
Best Of, a collection of limited-edition goods sourced from some of the city’s top independent artisans, creatives, and brands, supports The Hoxton’s dedication to supporting and promoting community partners and makers and is available for purchase at the hotel. The Hox Shop in Berlin will include products including vegan skincare from MERME, ceramic dinnerware from the independent pottery brand Helka Ceramics, hand-selected books from Bücherbogen, and Kombucha by Bouche.
