Shannon Airport Eliminates Liquid Restrictions on Hand Carry

Shannon Airport has implemented a security screening system that eliminates the need for liquid limitations in travelers’ carry-on luggage.

Containers larger than 100ml were not allowed in airline cabins under the restrictions, which were imposed generally in 2006 to combat potential terrorist threats.

Passengers can now take bottles of liquids, gels, and lotions larger than the former 100ml restriction – such as bottled water, baby food, medicines, drinks, aerosol cans, and toiletries – and pass through security more rapidly than before thanks to the €2.5 million security screening system.

It also eliminates the need for laptops to be removed from cabin luggage.

Passengers should be aware that liquid limits still apply at other airports, which could affect them if they are transiting or transferring — and will also apply if they return via another hub.

The containers must be resealable and must be handed to security screening officers if required.

Heathrow Airport is planning to improve its security scanners so that passengers can retain liquids and devices inside their luggage.

It first announced the plans in the summer of 2019, stating that it intended to spend £50 million on next-generation CT security equipment.
