Saudi Arabia is Building a Year-Round Ski Village

Saudi Arabia is building a year-round ski village as part of ambitious plans to develop a new global mountain tourism destination.

Outdoor skiing will be a “unique element” of the Trojena venture, “particularly in Gulf countries known for their dry temperatures,” as it has never been seen before in the region.

The project is expected to be completed by 2026, according to a statement made on behalf of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. It’s part of Neom, a $500 billion destination development in the country’s northwestern corner.

It did, however, state: “Amateurs and professionals alike will be able to enjoy the many ski runs of various difficulties with an array of contrasting and breathtaking views.

“The blue waters of the Red Sea, beauty of the Neom mountain ranges and the golden desert sand dunes will provide skiers a first-of-its-kind experience that combines these diverse environments with fun-filled and adventurous moments.”

According to a spokeswoman, artificial snow will be manufactured alongside natural snowfall.

In the winter, temperatures in the area plunge below zero, and the average year-round temperature is 10 degrees Celsius lower than in other cities in the vicinity.

Trojena lies 50 kilometers from the Gulf of Aqaba coast, and it includes a mountain range with Saudi Arabia’s highest peaks at 2,600 meters above sea level.

A ski slope, ultra-luxury family and health resorts, shops and restaurants, watersports and mountain biking, as well as a natural reserve, are among the additional amenities planned.

By 2030, it expects 700,000 visitors and 7,000 permanent residents.

According to the crown prince, “Trojena will redefine mountain tourism for the world by creating a place based on the principles of ecotourism, highlighting our efforts to preserve nature and enhance the community’s quality of life.

“It also confirms our commitment to be part of the global effort to protect the environment. Trojena will be an important addition to tourism in the region, a unique example of how Saudi Arabia is creating destinations based on its geographical and environmental diversity.

“This forward-looking vision will ensure that mountain tourism will be another revenue stream to support the Kingdom’s economic diversification while still preserving its natural resources for future generations.”
