From next month Thailand will reduce the mandatory quarantine period to 7 days from the existing 14 days. The easing of restrictions will apply to foreign tourists arriving in the country who have received a Covid 19 vaccine within 3 months of their travel dates. Visitors will still be required to present a negative Covid 19 PCR test which has been taken within the 72 hours prior to their arrival in the country.
“Foreigners travelling to Thailand with vaccination certificates in accordance with the requirements of each brands, will need to quarantine for only seven days,” Health Minister Anutin Charnvirankul told a news conference.
Thailand has been very successful at limiting the spread of the Covid 19 virus by imposing limits on flights, strict entry requirements and mandatory quarantine for all arrivals. As a result, the country has seen only 26,000 positive cases of Covid 19 and 85 covid related deaths.
These restrictions have however had a significant impact on the vital tourism sector resulting in widespread job losses and business closures. The country received close to 40 million visitors in 2019. The collapse of the tourism sector has contributed to Thailand experiencing its deepest economic contraction in over two decades.
