Qantas, has released information about a lounge upgrading program that would see them construct four all-new lounges and expand and renovate a number of others. A brand-new first class lounge at London Heathrow is the centerpiece of the initiative, which the airline is funding with AU$100 million (US$68.82 million).
The new Qantas first class lounge at Heathrow (LHR) is scheduled to debut in late 2025, coinciding with the start of the airline’s ultra-long-haul “Project Sunrise” flights to Melbourne Airport (MEL) and Sydney Kingsford Smith (SYD). As the first lounge of its sort to open in Europe, this facility will go down in history. After all, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Singapore, and Sydney are the locations of Qantas’ other four first-class lounges.
At Terminal 3 of London Heathrow Airport, Qantas currently operates a lounge known as the International Lounge. Once operational, the First Lounge will coexist with this, and the current space will become the International Business Lounge. They will all fit the substantial number of premium guests flying on Project Sunrise flights. Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas Group, said: “London is one of the most important destinations on our network, and it’s the perfect location for a First Lounge, especially with our direct Project Sunrise flights on the way.”
There is still a lot of work for Qantas to accomplish on this front as the anticipated inauguration of the new First Lounge at London Heathrow Airport is still more than two years away. Yet it has big expectations for the lounge and even plans to build it with direct gate access in mind, pending approval.
Along with offering customers “an unmatched dining experience,” Qantas wants to make wellness amenities a focal point of its new London lounge. Since that the First Lounge will have”sweeping views of the airfield,” the national carrier claims that aviators will also feel at home there. Joyce adds: “Heathrow is one of the world’s busiest airports, so we’re very pleased to be working with them to secure a great space in the terminal for an additional lounge.”
