On its maiden vessel, the Havila Capella, the start-up cruise line Havila Voyages has begun sailing with routes along the Norwegian coast.
The 640-passenger ship began its journey from Bergen to Kirkenes on Sunday (12th December).
“As we have established a new shipping company and built the first new ship in 18 years with three more new ships in store, I think we should dare to say that 12.12.21 is a historic day both for Havila Voyages and for the coastal route Bergen-Kirkenes,” said Bent Martini, CEO of Norwegian firm Havila Voyages.
The last three ships, the Havila Castor, Havila Polaris, and Havila Pollux, are scheduled to enter service in 2022.
The maritime company claims to be operating the most environmentally efficient ships on the Norwegian coast.
It has invested almost NOK 500 million (£42 million) in making its plug-in hybrid ships environmentally friendly, using the world’s largest passenger ship battery packs.
The ships can sail for four hours without making any noise or emitting any pollution thanks to the batteries.
Furthermore, there are no buffets on board because all meals are given to guests at their tables, saving Havila Voyages a total of 60 tonnes of food waste per year.
