Non-stop Gatwick Express services from central London will resume on 3rd April, although at a reduced frequency.
Between London Victoria and Gatwick, two trains will run nonstop every hour.
The service used to run four trains per hour, but due to an ongoing upgrade of the airport’s railway station, there aren’t enough platforms to accommodate all of them.
The station is being reconstructed to improve accessibility, reduce passenger congestion, and shorten travel times for passengers on the Brighton mainline. It is expected to be completed next year.
The service is scheduled to function seven days a week, although the company warns that weekend technical work may cause delays.
As the virus spread and passenger numbers at the airport plummeted, services were first terminated in March 2020.
The direct rail link to the airport was restored on weekdays on 12th December before being suspended again two weeks later owing to Christmas engineering maintenance and the impact of Covid’s Omicron version.
Stephen MacCallaugh, managing director of Gatwick Express, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to bring back our non-stop Gatwick Express service from Sunday 3 April as we look forward to a busier summer season including for international travel.
“With more passengers now returning to Gatwick by rail and the South Terminal reopening, now is the time to get our service running again to support the airport and the economic recovery in the south-east.”
Emma Rees, Gatwick’s head of real estate and surface access, added: “The return of Gatwick Express is great news and we’re really looking forward to the completion of the upgraded railway station.
“People are flying from Gatwick in ever-increasing numbers and excellent rail links which have a dedicated service specifically for airport passengers are a vital element of our recovery and our link into central London and beyond.”
