The UK’s full list of destinations under the new traffic light system has been revealed.
Just 12 countries and territories have been granted “no quarantine” status for returning visitors: Ascension Island, Australia, Brunei, the Falkland Islands, the Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Iceland, Israel, New Zealand, Portugal, Tristan da Cunha, St Helena, Singapore, and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
Malta and Spain’s Balearic Islands had hoped to be added to the green list, but were disappointed.
Portugal, Gibraltar, and Israel are the only conventional summer sun destinations on the green list.
Ireland maintains its unique status as a member of the common travel area, with no restrictions on visitors to the United Kingdom.
Countries are rated as red, amber, or green under the current traffic light scheme, depending on the likelihood of bringing new cases and variants of coronavirus into the UK.
Prior to returning to the UK, travellers from green list countries must pay for pre-departure and post-arrival checks.
Turkey, the Maldives, and Nepal have been added to the current red list, which requires hotel quarantine. There are currently 43 countries on the list.
The Champions League final between Manchester City and Chelsea will be held in Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, on May 29.
“Fans should not travel to Turkey,” Mr Shapps said. “We would be open to hosting the match. It is a decision for Uefa to make.”
