The first Six Senses Hotel Resorts Spas in Scandinavia will debut in 2024.
Six Senses Svart in Norway, according to the hotel operator, will be the world’s first net energy-positive destination, setting a “new norm” in carbon-neutral travel.
The 94-room hotel will be built at the foot of the Svartisen glacier in northern Norway, suspended from poles above the Holandsfjorden fjord to reduce the environmental effects.
The hotel will have a contemporary circular design with sophisticated and environmentally friendly Scandinavian decor.
It is the northern hemisphere’s first building to be designed and constructed to the highest energy-efficiency level.
Six Senses Svart will capture enough solar energy to feedback into the system, covering the hotel, nearby operations, boat shuttle, and the energy required to create the structure, making it self-sufficient.
With its own waste and water management, recycling, and renewable infrastructure, the property will be self-sufficient. For the restaurants and bars, which will include a zero-waste dining venue The Marketplace, the team will collaborate with current sustainable fishing and farming enterprises as well as local suppliers.
There will be an Experience Centre, an Alchemy Bar that will highlight the history of regional healing techniques, an Earth Lab for sustainability education, and a Svart Design Lab that will act as an incubator for innovation and education for guests to understand how new technologies can bring the sector closer to carbon neutrality.
Six Senses Svart will filter and bottle its own drinking water, as do other Six Senses properties. Organic materials with the least embedded energy will also be used on the property.
Eat With Six Senses, Sleep With Six Senses, and Grow With Six Senses, the brand’s education and entertainment program for younger guests, will be available to guests.
A biohacking lounge will be available, with everything from compression boots to vitamin IVs. The Svart Touch idea, a touchless technology that adapts the environment to the guest’s mood and health, will be featured in each guest room.
The new facility will address “booming demand” for adventurous and environmentally responsible travel, according to Six Senses.
Neil Jacobs, the CEO of Six Senses, said: “Sustainable properties call for extraordinary creativity, and Six Senses Svart takes us to a whole new level in terms of pushing boundaries.
“The concept has become bigger than the project itself, as it will provide a futuristic showcase for what can be achieved in terms of sustainability and energy solutions, and therefore a blueprint within our hospitality industry and the development sector in general.”
Chief executive of the project’s owner and developer, Jan-Gunnar Mathisen, added: “To enhance the vision of Svart, we have established a Net Zero Lab, a vehicle for developing and taking to market the technology created by us in a joint effort with Six Senses to reach the common goal for net-zero travel.
“This means the guest journey will have zero environmental impact from start to end. The mission is to achieve common ground for all stakeholders pushing the technology to the next level to benefit the resort and the industry at large.”
