The European Commission recently decided that airlines may permit both mobile data and 5G on board. In other words, you wouldn’t be blocked off from the outside world when in the air anymore. You’ll be able to stay in touch with the outside world while in flight, make calls, stream videos, and finish up work.
Nevertheless, the UK may not follow since this significant shift currently only affects the European Union.
Although 5G will now be permitted on airplanes, individual airlines will still have the final say on whether to adopt it. Even if the UK follows the EU’s lead, it might not really matter because many airlines, including Virgin and British Airways, already forbid audio or video conversations. However, it’s a substantial change if you’re flying on an airline that has decided to apply it at some point in 2023 and traveling within the EU.
