The Airbus A380 superjumbo operated by Emirates has made its first trip back to Birmingham Airport since the pandemic began in March 2020. The daily A380 will be added to Dubai’s current Boeing 777 service.
The deployment of the double-decker aircraft, which has a capacity of 615 passengers, coincides with a rise in demand for travel around the world ahead of the summer travel season.
Daily A380 flights to Glasgow resumed in March, followed by the start of the Birmingham service. From Birmingham, the airline initially introduced A380 flights in 2016. By March 2024, the airline intends to expand its four-class A380 operations with premium economy cabins to more than 35 locations in 20 different countries as part of a $2 billion refurbishment project.
Richard Jewsbury, divisional vice president of Emirates UK, said: “The return will make it easier to connect more passengers to popular long-haul destinations including Thailand, Australia and of course the vibrant city of Dubai for summer and beyond.”
Birmingham airport chief executive Nick Barton added: “Whether travelling for business, leisure or family, our twice daily Dubai services are very popular with nine out of 10 seats sold on average. The extra capacity offered by the A380 will be welcomed by Emirates customers.”
