The investment will support about 1,200 jobs overall and generate about 100 direct jobs for pilots and crew in the UK. Three A320s with 186 seats will be based at the airport by the airline.
The decision was made in response to the carrier’s return to growth this summer, when it will operate its largest-ever UK summer flying programme, with almost 8% more capacity than before the epidemic, more than 1 million more tickets, and 57 new routes, including 23 from the UK.
The airline will be able to further expand its network from Birmingham with new routes thanks to the arrival of more aircraft.
EasyJet’s chief executive, Johan Lundgren, said: “We are delighted to be announcing our new base in Birmingham, the UK’s second-largest city, which creates around 100 direct and many more indirect jobs.”
“Having already served Birmingham for many years, the decision to open a base and grow at the airport now is a testament to the strong demand we see, coupled with the importance of the UK market in supporting our profitable growth.”
