British Airways resumed short-haul flights at Gatwick today (29th March), marking the airport’s return after a two-year Covid hiatus.
Services will be operated under BA’s Air Operators Certificate (AOC) until later this year when operations will be transferred to the new branded subsidiary BA Euroflyer.
The new airline will fly under the BA brand and will be identical to the company’s existing subsidiary BA Cityflyer.
Due to the Covid-19 epidemic, BA halted European operations at Gatwick and relocated a handful of flights to Heathrow.
Short-haul flights will resume today (Tuesday) to Larnaca, Amsterdam, Paphos, and Tenerife, as part of a network of 35 destinations, with more to be added later this year.
Tom Stoddart, Acting CEO of BA Euroflyer, said: “Today marks a significant milestone for British Airways as we operate our first European services from Gatwick in two years.
“I am really proud of what we have created at Gatwick, we have an excellent team with lots of new and exciting talent.
”I am looking forward in anticipation to see our newest subsidiary grow, adding new routes and providing customers with more options to get away on holiday with a premium British Airways service.”
All flights will have a business class cabin, distinguishing it from low-cost competitors like EasyJet and Wizz Air at Gatwick.
The reintroduction of European short-haul flights from Gatwick happened just one day after the airline reopened its home at South Terminal.
Long-haul travelers will be able to check-in at a new dedicated World Traveller Plus check-in zone.
The new zone, which sits alongside the airline’s Club World desks, provides private check-in for those flying in the airline’s World Traveller Plus category (premium economy).
