The Best Natural Wonders of Panama

The connecting land strip between the two landmasses of North and South America, the Central American country of Panama can be found. This idyllic country is packed with hidden gems, from UNESCO heritage sites to outstanding historical events.

Volcano Barú National Park – Chiriquí

In the Northern province of the country can find Panama´s highest peak: Volcan Barú. At an impressive 3505 meters, the rising landmass dominates the scenery. On a clear day, it is possible to see both the Pacific and Caribbean. 

The volcano houses a unique ecosystem, packed with species found nowhere else in the country. The area is particularly popular with avid bird watches, who hope to catch a glimpse of the elusive resplendent quetzal; a spectacularly colored bird, endemic to cloud forest regions. The area also attracts a range of thrill-seekers, who seek out the enchanting white-water rapids. 

La Amistad International Park – Chiriquí

Also in the Northern province of Chiriquí, the internationally renowned La Amistad International Park is located. A World Heritage Site, La Amistad is thought to be one of the most biologically diverse regions in the Americas. 

Unlike other wildlife zones in Panama, this is not a National Park. Rather, an International Park. This is because the wild terrain encompasses both Costa Rica and Panama. Under the dual partnership, both countries work together to preserve outstanding beauty. 

To preserve this natural beauty, much of the park is inaccessible – with deep, impenetrable valleys and raging rivers. However, there is a visitor entrance near Cerro Punta. Here, hikers of all abilities can undertake spectacular hikes, overlooking incredible views. 

Isla Coiba National Park – Chiriquí 

The largest island in Central America, covering an area of 503 km2, Coiba is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The National Park encompasses 38 spectacular islands, each offering an array of exciting activities. The area is rich in diversity, making this one of the best places to dive and snorkel in Panama. 

But the past of this idyllic island is far from perfect. In 1919, a penal colony was constructed on the Island, where torture and violent punishment wasn’t uncommon. For those into the supernatural, Coiba is said to be haunted by past prisoners executed here. 

But fast-forward to today, and the island boasts a tropical array of species. In fact, due to the separation from the mainland some 15000 years ago, many of the flora and fauna have evolved independently, creating species found nowhere else on earth – including the Coiba Island Howler Monkey. 

Natural Metropolitan Park – Panama 

When one thinks of Panama, perhaps towering skyscrapers come to mind. The capital of Panama City supports a bustling hive of commercial trade and activity. In fact, Panama City is one of the most developed cities in all of Latin America. 

However, many people fail to see past this sprawling metropolis. Whilst there are some fascinating sights within the city, there are natural wonders just on the outskirts – a mere stone’s through away via taxi. Welcome to the Natural Metropolitan Park. A beautiful tropical rainforest surrounds Panama City, complete with a rather large diversity of life.

Soberanía National Park – Panama 

Slightly further afield, but still, within an hour of Panama City, Soberanía National Park stretches for over 55000 acres. The mighty Chagres River, the largest river in Panama, flows through the park and provides life to a large array of life – including 500 species of birds. 

Incredibly, this National Park acts as the watershed for the Panama Canal – keeping the milestone of human engineering in operation. Within the park itself, a series of hiking trails can be found that meander between towering buttress roots and undulating valleys. 

Kuna Yala Comarca – Guna Yala 

A thin sliver in the Northern province, the Kuna Yala Comaraca is a true tropical paradise. Over 350 islands and islets form this archipelago, each bursting with a huge diversity of ecosystems – coral reefs, mangrove swamps, and sandy stretches. Oftentimes, few tourists venture to this part of Panama, leaving you to explore the islands for yourself, alongside the Kuna indigenous community. 

Fortunately, modern development has yet to claim this land. Instead, marvel at the beautiful natural views and incredible sunrises on offer. The aqua-marine waters are some of the most inviting in all of Panama; the perfect place to relax. 

Darién National Park – Darién 

It doesn’t come much wilder than Darién. The endless stretch of rainforest and swampland is thought to be one of the last remaining strongholds of the true wildness in all of the Americas. The untouched beauty of this Southern National Park extends into Northern Columbia. This is the largest National Park in Panama, covering over 1.3 million acres of pristine jungle.

Although much of the National Park is inaccessible, great opportunities for nature lovers present themselves. However, it is not easy going. You will have to book a private tour, as well as a private flight to the Cana Field station.
