Tokyo is unquestionably one of the most exciting cities in the world, with beautiful culture and a long history. The huge skyscrapers and modern technology give a great contrast with the ancient streets and traditional temples. With over 38 million inhabitants, this bustling city could make you feel small among the giant billboards and neon-lit buildings.
There are countless ways to explore the city. But if you have only one day in Tokyo and would like to experience the best parts of it, you should follow us.
Take a morning stroll along the Sumida River and appreciate the peaceful moment with the view of Tokyo Skytree, one of Tokyo’s most iconic landmarks. Then head to the popular Senso Ji Temple.
The main hall of Senso Ji lies a good distance from the initial gateway. The Kaminari-mon or Thunder gate is where the city’s largest paper lantern is suspended. This gate welcomes you with its terrific paints in reds and blacks, representing lightning and thunder clouds. Once you have crossed the main entrance arch, you will be amazed by many Japanese traditional items and shops, known as Nakamise Dori.
Senso Ji Temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo, built in honor of the God Kannon. The smoke of burning incense, together with the prayers, are typically seen all day here. Around the central building, you will also find the five-floored pagoda and the authentic Japanese garden with a spectacular artificial lake.
Shibuya is only 40 minutes away from Asakusa by Tokyo metro. Take Hachiko exit to visit the Hachiko statue, built to honor the remarkable loyalty of a dog to its owner. The story said that Hachiko continued waiting for over nine years at Shibuya station after its owner passed away. Not far from that is the Shibuya Crossing, where tons of travelers from all over the globe make their way here to experience this world’s busiest pedestrian crossing and one of Japan’s most photogenic spots.
There are plenty of shops and restaurants surrounded by colorful neon lights and giant video screens. Try ramen, Japanese noodle soup, and aromatic Japanese tea for lunch. Then, move yourself to the world-famous Starbucks, and grab the seat against the Shibuya Scramble Crossing view and unwind with a cup of Matcha latte while overlooking the vibrant streets of Shibuya.
After the quality time in Shibuya, it is time to continue your day trip by taking the Yamanote Line to Harajuku and walk to the west across the bridge to Meiji Jingu Shrine. The shrine was built for the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. You can stroll along the walking paths and lush forested areas with a sense of tranquility against the hustle and bustle of Tokyo.
Here you can also make a prayer for success, happiness, good health, and more as there is a belief that this place has strong spiritual energy to grant your wishes. You should spend a little bit more time at this place to breathe in the fresh air and relax with a calm atmosphere.
Travel to Roppongi by using the Yamanote Line and change to Hibiya Line to Roppongi station. Then, walk toward the Roppongi Hills complex, where you can recharge yourself with another drink from the cafe.
From here, you will be able to see the symbolism of Japan’s capital, Tokyo Tower. If you are hunting for the best view over the city, you can go up to the 52nd floor of Mori Tower. The building also offers an open-air rooftop sky deck for you to enjoy the 360-degree view of Tokyo along with magnificent sky for both day and night.
Evening:
Drop by the restaurant in Roppongi for dinner. There are a lots of different cuisines to cater to your need, from takoyaki and sushi to kebabs and pizza.
If you are still full of energy, grab some drinks at the bar and enjoy Tokyo’s fabulous nightlife. But if it is not your taste, why don’t you treat yourself to Japanese onsen at Ooedo-Onsen Monogatari. Take a deep soak in the main bath or open-air bath with Edo green garden. Or go for the footbath garden, where you can dip your feet and enjoy the soft music.
Planning your Tokyo trip:
Above activities are not everything in Tokyo, but it will definitely be one of the productive days that you would ever make. A day could be too short to cover all places in Tokyo as there are so many beautiful sites to explore and discover.
Planning to stay in Tokyo longer, you will be able to make a day trip to other cities, such as Kawagoe, Yokohama, Kamakura or even Mt. Fuji. But no matter short or long stay, Japan will never disappoint you.
