On Monday, P&O Ferries’ first brand-new hybrid ship is scheduled to sail on the Dover-Calais route for the first time.
The installation of extra batteries will enable entirely electric operation when technology advances and charging stations are introduced at ports.
With two bridges, the vessel will also be the largest double-ended hybrid ferry in the world, eliminating the need for it to turn in port and saving fuel on every voyage.
P&O Pioneer will replace the capacity of three older vessels because it is the longest ferry that travels between Dover and Calais. P&O Liberté, a sister ship, will join the fleet later this year.
The company made an investment in two 230 m long hybrid ships, which allow it to reduce fuel use while maintaining capacity.
The ferry company claims that the two new ferries would emit 40% less carbon dioxide than the ships they replace.
Following the previous retirement of the Pride of Burgundy, the Pride of Kent and Pride of Canterbury will be replaced by the new vessels.
Over 100,000 English Channel crossings were anticipated for P&O Pioneer over its career.
