The first city in the UK to impose a “tourist tax” on visitors is Manchester.
Tourists will have to pay an additional £1 per room, every night, as part of the City Visitor Fee. This money will be used to support the operation of major events, conferences, festivals, advertising campaigns, and street sweeping.
Joanne Roney, chief executive of Manchester City Council, told the BBC that the program will bring in an additional £3 million year to improve the experience for visitors.
According to reports, she indicated the sum will be “invested directly into these activities, supporting Manchester’s accommodation sector to protect and create jobs and benefiting the city’s economy as a whole”.
The new fee was instituted following the enrollment of 73 hotels and serviced apartments in the Manchester Accommodation Business Improvement District (ABID) levy system, which was set up in advance of the city’s anticipated growth in the hotel and vacation rental industries.
