Boom released information about their Overture aircraft at the Farnborough Air Show last week. Boom plans to launch a new supersonic aircraft with United.
The first Overture aircraft will be produced for commercial usage in 2024, begin flight tests in 2026, and start carrying passengers in 2029 thanks to American design and construction. There are now 70 aircraft under order with Overture, including acquisitions and options from United Airlines and Japan Airlines. United has made 15 aircraft purchases and has the option to make 35 more.
“Aviation has not seen a giant leap in decades. Overture is revolutionary in its design, and it will fundamentally change how we think about distance,” said Boom Founder and CEO Blake Scholl. “With more than 600 routes across the globe, Overture will make the world dramatically more accessible for tens of millions of passengers.”
A four-engine configuration, a curved fuselage, and gull wings are important elements. The first commercial airplane in a new era of safe, supersonic flight should be called Overture. using four engines instead of three, which results in lower thrust requirements for each, to fly at a speed that is double that of current passenger airlines. This results in lower aircraft noise levels and the addition of the first automatic noise reduction technology ever used. I still recall wanting to catch a glimpse of the Concorde as it flew by every day.
Overture will have a passenger capacity of 65 to 80 and utilize only sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). It will have a 4,250-nautical-mile range and travel at Mach 1.7 over water.
