Dr. Anthony Fauci, the US chief medical officer, believes the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine will be accepted when the country reopens to overseas visitors in November.
The AZ vaccine is currently not recommended for use in the United States by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which oversees vaccines in the country.
On Tuesday (21st September), Fauci told BBC Radio 4’s Today program that the country has a “significant amount” of information on the vaccine.
“I don’t believe there’s any reason to believe that people who have received the AZ vaccine should feel there’s going to be a problem,” Fauci said.
“I can’t account for every vaccine that has been approved by the UK. I’m not sure about all of them, but the specific one about AZ, given that we have a substantial amount of information on it, again, without being definitive about it, I would predict that there would not be problem there.”
Fauci said now the US is comparable with “so many other countries”, including the UK, the government wants to have a uniform policy of requiring vaccinations and testing.
The final decision on whether or not the vaccine is approved for travel to the US when it reopens its borders to international travelers in November will be made by the CDC.
Fauci also detailed how exceptions on entering the country will be made for children and those medically exempt from having a Covid-19 vaccine.
