Goa is the party capital of India, and the small western state bustles year-round with wild bashes. But you don’t have to be a party animal to visit this slice of coastal heaven. If you’re looking for a more relaxed vacation, there are plenty of things to do in Goa. From secluded beaches to gorgeous churches, Goa can host travelers not interested in the nightlife scene.
Goa’s stunning scenery, hospitable people, and rich history make it a unique Indian destination. Whether you’re a history buff or looking for your tropical paradise, Goa has it for you. It’s not only a destination for night owls who dance till dawn. Continue below for tips on how to spend a quiet vacation in Goa.
While North Goa is revered for its pulsating nightlife, South Goa has a more relaxed vibe for idyllic vacations. If you’re not a party animal, you can hang out on secluded beaches and escape the bustling crowds of North Goa. Lounge on untamed beaches and feel the serenity of the turquoise waters crashing against the golden shores.
With the lack of tourist crowds compared to North Goa, shopping is less chaotic in South Goa. Flea markets often have more locals, and the scene won’t be as hectic compared to North Goa markets. While you still need sharp negotiation skills to score a deal, you might have better luck in South Goa. Don’t miss the Palolem Flea Market for the chance to buy colorful clothes, bags, hats, and more.
And to really unwind in South Goa, spoil yourself with an evening of luxury beside the quiet shores. Whether you stay at a spa retreat, hotel, or beach shack, South Goa doesn’t have the wild parties of North Goa. If you’re on a couple’s getaway, South Goa is a delight for the romantic atmosphere.
Baga, Calangute, and Candolim beaches rank among the most famous and busiest beaches in Goa. Thousands of tourists hang out on their golden shores each year and create a vibrant atmosphere. But if that doesn’t suit your style, Goa has plenty of untamed beaches that lack modern amenities. That lack of seafood shacks, accommodations, and clubs make these secluded beaches an ideal spot for relaxation.
Situated in South Goa, Butterfly Beach is a picturesque hangout that’s often free of tourists. The small crescent beach sees more locals and getting there requires a forest hike or boat ride. But the backdrop of immense boulders and lush vegetation makes Butterfly Beach a quiet spot away from the crowds.
Kakolem Beach is another hidden paradise overlooked by many tourists due to its isolation from the party strip. The immaculate, golden-sand beach entices swimmers with crystal-clear water and offers shade beneath palm trees. And for an awe-inspiring experience for nature lovers, head to Galgibaga Beach to witness the hatching of Olive Ridley sea turtles.
While most Goa tourists are here to party, escape the noise is surrounding yourself in its picturesque scenery. The unspoiled beaches are the place to start, but Goa has much more to offer nature lovers. Head inland to find the multi-tiered, 310-meter Dudhsagar Falls. Located in the Western Ghats along the Mandovi River, the falls are among the most beautiful sights in India. The spindles cascade against rocky cliffs with a lush forest backdrop. Trains sometimes rumble along the tracks in front of the falls to create an unbelievable photo.
For a chance to spot wildlife, the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary protects a wide range of endangered or injured creatures. The refuge encompasses 8 sq. km and offers eco-tourism opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts. Join a deer safari, roam the verdant forests, or stay in one of the overnight cottages. Some of the wild animals you’ll encounter include Indian bison, leopards, cobras, wild boars, Sambhar deer, and Malabar giant squirrels.
Due to its colonial past, Goa has many of the most beautiful churches in India. The Churches and convents of Goa present a collection of religious monuments constructed by the Portuguese. Goa became a center of Christianization in India, and most of the churches stand today.
The UNESCO Basilica of Bom Jesus is an exemplary piece of Baroque-style architecture and earned minor basilica status. Built-in the 16th century, Se Cathedral has a gilded altar and sits beside an archaeological museum. The Immaculate Conception Church has made many appearances in Bollywood and dazzles visitors with its white-clad exterior. The church illuminates after sundown and is among the best places to visit in Goa at night.
Catholic Church of St. Francis of Assisi operates as a museum and features elaborate paintings and detailed carvings. The Church of St. Cajetan often gets skipped by tourists and bears a resemblance to St. Peter’s Basilica. Although it lies in ruins, the Church of St. Augustine’s only standing tower presents an idea of its immense size centuries ago.
