Madeira is the latest destination to announce that vaccinated tourists will be welcome

The Portuguese island of Madeira has become the latest destination to announce its plans to welcome tourists that have been vaccinated against Covid 19 or that have recently recovered from the virus.

Tourists will be able to travel as a result of a new green corridor providing they can show evidence of having recovered from Covid-19 in the past 90 days or they have a certificate confirming they have received both doses of a vaccination.

Those wishing to travel will be required to submit their documentation via the Madeirasafe.com app before they travel. Madeira is part of Portugal which is currently on the government’s red list of 33 countries. As a result, all arrivals into the UK from Portugal are required to pay to quarantine at a designated hotel for 10 days.

Portugal was added to the “red list” because of concerns about the country’s connections to Brazil which has seen the spread of a worrying variant of the Covid 19 virus. The Madeira Promotion Bureau has however argued that the UK’s restrictions should not apply to it as it is geographically more than 1,000km from the mainland of Portugal and there have been no confirmed cases of the Brazilian variant on the island.
